Chinese President Xi Jinping lauded Vietnam’s new leader, To Lam, during their talks in Beijing on Monday, reinforcing the strong diplomatic and economic bonds between the two neighbouring communist nations. This marked To Lam’s first state visit since assuming office, signaling the significance both countries place on their longstanding relationship.
During their meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping underscored Vietnam’s crucial role in China’s regional diplomacy, affirming that Hanoi remains a key priority. He emphasized China’s support for Vietnam in maintaining Party leadership and pursuing a path of socialist modernization tailored to its own national context.
To Lam’s visit to China highlights the strategic importance of the relationship between the two countries, which share extensive economic and trade ties despite occasional disputes over the South China Sea. Lam’s choice of China as his first international destination since taking office was seen as a gesture of goodwill, demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to deepening cooperation with its northern neighbor.
Prior to the talks in Beijing, Lam visited Guangzhou, where Vietnam’s former President Ho Chi Minh once engaged in revolutionary activities.
China and Vietnam have maintained a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2008, with both countries collaborating on infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Recent agreements between the two nations include plans for cross-border railway developments, agricultural investments, and initiatives to enhance energy cooperation and green development.
These agreements are expected to boost Vietnam’s economic integration with China’s supply chain as Lam’s visit continues, further discussions with top Chinese officials, including Premier Li Qiang, are anticipated to build on the existing foundation of mutual trust and collaboration, ensuring that the two nations remain close partners in the region.
