China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met with Hiroshi Moriyama, chief of the general council of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), in Beijing on Tuesday to discuss enhancing communication, understanding, and cooperation between the two neighboring nations. Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized the importance of mutual support and collaboration for the benefit of regional and global peace and development.

Wang Yi highlighted the necessity for China and Japan to abide by the provisions of the four political documents that govern their bilateral relations. He advocated for increased dialogue and deeper cooperation, stating that such efforts serve the interests of both nations’ people and contribute to broader international stability.

The recent third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee was also mentioned by Wang, who indicated that China’s comprehensive reforms would open new opportunities for cooperation and development with Japan.

Addressing environmental concerns, Wang Yi reiterated China’s stance on the ocean discharge of contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant. He stressed that the issue impacts human health, the marine environment, and international public interests. Wang called for the establishment of a long-term international monitoring mechanism to ensure effective and inclusive oversight, with China’s participation being crucial.

On the Taiwan issue, Wang urged Japan to adhere to the spirit of the four political documents, cautioning that the Taiwan Strait should not be treated as a political theater. He emphasized that Japan must act prudently to maintain the political foundation of China-Japan relations.

Hiroshi Moriyama expressed sympathy for the flood victims in China’s Hunan Province and other affected areas. During his visit, Moriyama acknowledged China’s rapid development and economic vitality.

He conveyed a commitment to continue the tradition of friendly relations established by previous generations of politicians. Moriyama expressed a desire to strengthen exchanges, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and support the sustainable development of strategic bilateral relations.
