On Thursday, a Chinese defence spokesperson clarified that the recent training of the Liaoning aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific Ocean aligns with international law and established practices. The remarks were made in response to concerns raised by Japan about the exercise. Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, addressed these concerns following media inquiries.
According to Zhang, the training of the Liaoning carrier formation is a standard component of the annual exercise plan. The primary objective of the training is to bolster the navy’s combat readiness and operational capabilities. Zhang emphasised that such exercises are routine and should not be viewed as extraordinary or provocative. The training, which involves manoeuvres and drills in the Western Pacific, is conducted to maintain and enhance the proficiency of the naval forces.
The spokesperson’s comments aim to dispel any misinterpretations of the exercise’s intent and scope. By adhering to international norms, China seeks to demonstrate that its military activities are consistent with global standards and do not pose any undue threat to regional stability.
The Liaoning carrier, China’s first aircraft carrier, plays a crucial role in the country’s naval strategy.
