Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba held discussions in Guangzhou on Wednesday to enhance cooperation in various fields. The meeting aimed to explore new opportunities amidst China’s comprehensive modernization efforts, driven by the third plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
Wang Yi, who also serves on the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau, highlighted the new phase of deepening reforms in China. He emphasized that China’s modernization would present fresh opportunities for global partners. During the talks, he noted Ukraine’s early support and active participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, underscoring China’s position as Ukraine’s largest trading partner and a primary market for Ukrainian agricultural exports.
In the first half of 2024, bilateral trade between China and Ukraine experienced significant growth, reflecting the potential for expanded cooperation. Wang Yi suggested leveraging existing bilateral mechanisms to strengthen practical collaboration across various sectors. He announced China’s intention to increase grain imports from Ukraine and emphasized the importance of maintaining smooth logistics channels and international food security.
Wang Yi expressed gratitude for Ukraine’s assistance in evacuating Chinese citizens, including international students, during the early stages of the conflict in Ukraine. He conveyed hopes for continued measures to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals and institutions in Ukraine.
The meeting in Guangzhou marks a step forward in reinforcing China-Ukraine relations, as both countries seek to capitalize on the growing momentum of their trade and cooperative ventures. By focusing on mutual benefits and practical collaboration, the discussions underscored the commitment to fostering a stable and prosperous partnership.
