China launches comprehensive health campaign for elderly

China’s National Health Commission, in collaboration with the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has unveiled a new initiative for 2024-2027 aimed at enhancing medical and health services for elderly citizens unable to care for themselves. This campaign targets seniors aged 65 and above, with the objective of providing comprehensive health support and ensuring their well-being.

The newly issued circular mandates that eligible medical and health institutions, particularly grassroots facilities, as well as nurseries and rehabilitation centers, deliver essential services to these elderly individuals. These services will include basic health assessments, consultations, and guidance for transitioning treatment as needed. The circular emphasizes the importance of conducting at least one lifestyle and health assessment, one physical examination, and offering health maintenance advice annually.

Healthcare institutions are instructed to deploy a minimum of two professionals to offer door-to-door services, ensuring that the elderly receive adequate care and support in their homes. This move is designed to safeguard the rights and interests of the elderly population, ensuring they have access to necessary medical services and maintaining their quality of life.

As of the end of 2023, China’s elderly demographic has reached 297 million people aged 60 and above, with 217 million aged 65 and above. This significant population underscores the necessity for such a comprehensive campaign to address the health needs of its aging citizens effectively. The initiative reflects China’s commitment to improving healthcare access and quality for its elderly, aligning with broader goals to enhance social welfare and support for vulnerable groups within the nation.
