China has criticized the joint statement issued by the US and Japan after their 2+2 meeting in Tokyo, claiming it misrepresents China’s foreign policies. Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, addressed the issue during a regular press conference on July 29, stating that the statement unfairly attacked China and interfered in its internal affairs.
The US-Japan statement alleged that China aims to reshape the international order to its advantage, often at the expense of others. Lin refuted these allegations, asserting that the statement lacked factual basis and falsely accused China on various issues, including maritime disputes and military development. He emphasized that China is committed to peaceful development and maintains a defensive defense policy.
Lin highlighted that China’s military activities are justified and reasonable, with nuclear capabilities kept to a minimum level necessary for national security. He contrasted this with the actions of the US and Japan, accusing them of pursuing agendas detrimental to the security interests of other nations in the Asia-Pacific region.
The spokesperson further accused the US and Japan of inciting regional tensions and fostering a Cold War mentality through their emphasis on “extended deterrence” and “nuclear deterrence.” He argued that this approach risks escalating regional tensions and could lead to nuclear proliferation.
Lin also addressed issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Xizang, stating these are China’s internal affairs and should not be subject to external interference. He called on the US and Japan to respect the one-China principle and cease their support for separatist forces.
China urged the US and Japan to stop creating confrontations and to contribute to regional stability rather than becoming sources of disruption in the Asia-Pacific.
