United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Georgette Gagnon from Canada as the new Deputy Special Representative (Political) for Afghanistan in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Gagnon succeeds Markus Potzel of Germany, who has completed his term in the role.
Gagnon brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having previously served as the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Additionally, she has held the role of Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, where she was instrumental in managing humanitarian efforts and supporting political stability during a period of significant upheaval.
In her new role at UNAMA, Gagnon will be tasked with supporting the UN’s mission in Afghanistan, which includes facilitating the peace process, promoting political dialogue, and aiding in the stabilization efforts in a country facing ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage her extensive experience in conflict resolution and humanitarian coordination.
Secretary-General Guterres praised Gagnon for her leadership and dedication, stating, “Georgette Gagnon has demonstrated remarkable expertise in managing complex political and humanitarian situations. Her appointment reflects the United Nations’ commitment to addressing the challenges in Afghanistan with experienced and capable leadership.”
Gagnon’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Afghanistan, where the UN continues to play a significant role in supporting peace efforts and addressing humanitarian needs. Her experience in Libya, a country with similar challenges, is expected to be invaluable as she steps into this pivotal role.
