UNICEF has announced the initiation of a series of humanitarian projects in Uruzgan, a province in southern Afghanistan, aimed at addressing critical needs in the region. The decision comes in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis and the urgent requirements of vulnerable children and families affected by ongoing conflict and economic hardship.
The new projects, which are set to commence immediately, focus on several key areas: education, health, and child protection. UNICEF plans to establish temporary learning centres to provide education for children who have been displaced or otherwise deprived of schooling. These centres will offer a safe environment for learning and psychological support, addressing both educational and emotional needs.
In the health sector, UNICEF will implement mobile clinics to deliver essential medical services to remote and underserved areas of Uruzgan. These clinics will provide vaccinations, maternal and child health care, and treatment for common illnesses. The initiative aims to reduce child mortality rates and improve overall health outcomes in a region where access to medical facilities is limited.
Child protection efforts will also be a priority. UNICEF will work to prevent child exploitation and abuse, offering support services for at-risk children. This includes providing psychosocial support and rehabilitative services to those who have suffered trauma.
UNICEF’s regional director emphasized the importance of these projects, highlighting the severe impact of ongoing conflict on the lives of children in Uruzgan. The organization has called for continued support from the international community to sustain these efforts and ensure the well-being of children in the province.
