UNAMA head announces new programs for Afghan farmers and drug addiction prevention

Otunbayeva announced that efforts are underway to organize a joint meeting focused on developing sustainable solutions for Afghan farmers who are currently reliant on the cultivation of opium poppies.

In a recent statement, Roza Otunbayeva, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), unveiled plans for a significant new initiative aimed at addressing two critical issues facing Afghanistan: alternative livelihoods for farmers and the treatment of drug addiction.

Otunbayeva announced that efforts are underway to organize a joint meeting focused on developing sustainable solutions for Afghan farmers who are currently reliant on the cultivation of opium poppies. This move comes in response to the escalating drug trade and its detrimental impact on Afghan society. The meeting aims to explore viable alternative livelihoods that could offer farmers economically feasible and socially responsible options, thereby reducing their dependency on illicit crops.

The initiative also addresses the urgent need for comprehensive treatment programs for drug addiction, a severe issue exacerbated by the ongoing conflict and instability in the region. By integrating discussions on both alternative livelihoods and addiction treatment, the UNAMA seeks to create a cohesive strategy that not only targets the root causes of drug production but also provides support for those affected by addiction.

Otunbayeva emphasized the importance of collaboration among international organizations, local governments, and communities to ensure the success of this initiative. She highlighted that a multifaceted approach is necessary to address the complex interplay between economic incentives for farmers and the need for robust healthcare and rehabilitation services for addicts.

The upcoming meeting will bring together stakeholders from various sectors to share insights and develop actionable plans. The UNAMA hopes that these efforts will contribute to long-term stability in Afghanistan by offering sustainable economic opportunities and addressing the severe public health challenges posed by drug addiction.
