The Ministry of Water and Electricity has secured a partnership with a Japanese organization called the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The agreement, valued at $710,000, will support the maintenance and monitoring of 11 irrigation canal projects within the region.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards bolstering agricultural infrastructure in Nangarhar, a province crucial to Afghanistan’s agricultural output. The Japanese organization’s involvement is expected to bring advanced techniques and expertise to the management of these irrigation systems, ensuring their long-term efficiency and sustainability.
The irrigation canals have been essential for supporting the province’s agriculture, particularly in regions where water scarcity can severely impact farming activities. By ensuring that these canals are well-maintained and monitored, the project aims to mitigate the risk of infrastructure failure and improve the reliability of water distribution.
Under the terms of the agreement, the focus will be on maintaining the existing infrastructure and implementing monitoring systems to track the performance and condition of the irrigation canals. These efforts are designed to optimize water use, reduce waste, and enhance crop yields, ultimately benefiting local farmers and communities.
The Ministry of Water and Electricity has expressed optimism that this project will set a precedent for future collaborations aimed at advancing Afghanistan’s infrastructure and agricultural resilience.
This agreement is anticipated to make a substantial difference in the lives of those dependent on agriculture in Nangarhar, reflecting a concerted effort to foster sustainable development and enhance food security in the region.
