Noor Jalal Jalali, the acting Minister of Public Health for Afghanistan, convened a critical meeting with key representatives from international organizations on Tuesday. The gathering included Edwin Ceniza Salvador, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Afghanistan; Tajudeen Oyewale, the UNICEF representative; and officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to a press release from the Ministry of Public Health, the discussions were centred on strategizing to prevent the spread of monkeypox, a growing concern for public health globally. The meeting highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated response involving various stakeholders to manage and mitigate the risk of an outbreak.
During the session, Jalali emphasized the importance of international collaboration in tackling the disease. He urged the representatives to support Afghanistan’s efforts in monkeypox prevention, underlining the critical role that these organizations play in providing technical and logistical support.
In response to the rising threat, a joint committee has been established to oversee the coordination of activities among the involved organizations. This committee will be responsible for implementing preventive measures, including public health campaigns and health system strengthening, aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.
By catering for collaboration and leveraging the expertise of WHO, UNICEF, and IOM, Afghanistan seeks to enhance its capacity to manage the disease effectively. This collaborative initiative marks a proactive approach in the fight against monkeypox, reflecting a broader commitment to safeguarding public health through joint international efforts.
