Asian markets: Nikkei 225 edges up 0.15% to close

The Nikkei 225 ended January 31 with a modest gain of 0.15%, rising 58.67 points to close at 39,572.42 JPY. The index opened at 39,574.38 JPY and fluctuated between 39,458.95 JPY and 39,681.82 JPY during the session.

Despite the daily uptick, the index has declined 1.38% over the past five days and remains 0.93% lower year-to-date. Over the past month, the index dropped 1.87%, though its six-month performance reflects a 5.68% gain. On a yearly basis, the Nikkei remains up 9.90%, indicating sustained long-term growth.
