Parts of Marine Parade experienced significant flooding on the morning of October 4, 2024, due to a damaged water pipe. The incident, which affected areas including Marine Drive and Still Road South, was reported around 11:40 AM after the pipe was compromised during lift retrofitting works at the pedestrian overhead bridge near Block 67 Marine Drive. Marine Parade Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Tan See Leng shared updates via Facebook regarding the situation.
The flooding led to water spilling onto Still Road South and nearby HDB blocks, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Both the Marine Parade Town Council and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) confirmed that areas surrounding Blocks 66 and 67 Marine Drive were also impacted. Notably, the flooding affected a lift at Block 67, necessitating the involvement of a lift company to drain the water from the lift pit to restore service promptly.
Dr. Tan, who also serves as Singapore’s Minister of Manpower, reassured residents that while the water pipe had been isolated for repairs, there was no disruption to water supply for nearby residential units. He noted that staff at the Marine Parade Community Centre were working to restore services that had been hindered due to accessibility issues.
In response to the emergency, Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, deployed a service crew to the site to isolate the leak and conduct repairs. The agency confirmed that the damaged pipe, which serves the Marine Drive area, would not affect water supply to residents. However, to facilitate repairs, one lane of Still Road South towards Eunos Link was temporarily closed, although by 3:30 PM, three of the four lanes were passable.
As workers began clearing the floodwater near Block 67 Marine Drive, Dr. Tan expressed gratitude towards PUB, the town council, and the cleanup crews for their swift action. By the afternoon, traffic access along Still Road South had resumed. The town council emphasized their commitment to minimizing further inconveniences for affected residents and coordinating closely with relevant agencies to ensure a prompt resolution.
As of now, investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the LTA planning to review the circumstances surrounding the damaged pipe to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
