Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s Minister of Economic Security, has emerged as the top contender for the country’s next prime minister in a recent Kyodo News poll among supporters of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The poll results, released this week, reveal growing backing for Takaichi, with many within the party viewing her as the most suitable candidate to succeed Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Takaichi, a long-time LDP politician and the first woman to hold the economic security portfolio garnered the most support in the survey, surpassing other key figures within the party. Her platform focuses on national security, technological advancement, and maintaining Japan’s traditional values, which has struck a chord with conservative LDP members. The Kyodo poll indicates that her hardline stance on security issues and economic resilience resonates strongly with supporters, who see her as a capable leader in uncertain times.
A member of the LDP since 1993, Takaichi has been a key player in shaping the party’s policies on security and technology. As Minister of Economic Security, she has championed initiatives aimed at safeguarding Japan’s supply chains and boosting technological competitiveness in critical industries such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Her strong alignment with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s political views has helped her build a solid support base among the LDP’s conservative wing.
The Kyodo News poll follows a period of declining approval ratings for current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who has faced criticism over his handling of the country’s economic challenges and response to international tensions, particularly in relation to China and North Korea. The poll’s results suggest that some within the LDP see Takaichi as a stronger leader on national security, a critical issue as Japan faces increasing regional threats.
