China expands AI education to primary schools at 2024 trade fair

China is accelerating its efforts to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) education into primary and secondary schools, aiming to equip students with future-ready skills. At the 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services, 11-year-old Li Xiuyuan, a student from Beijing Fuxue Hutong Primary School, was deeply focused on operating a physical programming product resembling an astronaut training simulator. Li, who began learning programming in third grade, shared that mastering the technology provided a sense of accomplishment.

Li’s school is one of many in China developing a scientific curriculum that includes AI and information programming. As more schools adopt similar approaches, technology companies are stepping in to meet the growing demand for AI education. YBC, a leading domestic programming education brand, has developed courses for children aged 4 to 16, promoting both computational thinking and innovation skills. According to Li Chao, YBC’s director of teaching and research, over 5 million students have benefited from the company’s “AI Innovative Education Solution,” which is now used in more than 2,500 schools.

Another platform, Feixiang Xingqiu, showcased its AI learning models that allow students to engage with real-world technologies such as image processing, speech processing, and natural language processing. These interactive experiences expose students to AI applications across industries including education, healthcare, and art.

China’s commitment to AI education aligns with its national strategy, introduced in 2017, to develop next-generation AI. The Ministry of Education further bolstered this initiative in March by launching an online AI education platform, aiming to improve digital literacy across the country. Efforts to create AI-integrated classrooms and train digitally literate teachers are key components of this strategy, according to education minister Huai Jinpeng.

As AI giants like iFLYTEK introduce innovative products into classrooms, students like Li Xiuyuan are already embracing the future of education.
