A fatal accident at Kita-Toda Station on the Saikyo Line disrupted multiple Shinkansen lines on the morning of September 7th. The incident, which occurred around 10:35 AM, led to an immediate suspension of Hokuriku Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Nagano Station, the Tohoku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Sendai Station, and the Joetsu Shinkansen between Tokyo and Niigata Station.
JR East reported that the accident, which involved a fatality, impacted the Shinkansen tracks running parallel to the Saikyo Line. As a result, operations on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, including the Kagayaki 522 service between Ueno and Tokyo Station, were halted. The interruption also caused delays for five trains across the affected lines, with wait times extending up to 79 minutes for some services.
Approximately 4,400 passengers experienced significant travel disruptions due to the sudden halt in Shinkansen services. Despite the severity of the incident, JR East confirmed that safety checks were promptly conducted, allowing operations to resume around 11:50 AM, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes after the initial suspension.
The quick restoration of services aimed to mitigate the impact on travelers, although the incident highlighted the vulnerabilities and challenges associated with maintaining high-speed rail operations in the event of emergencies. JR East has yet to provide additional details on the circumstances leading to the accident, but ongoing investigations are expected to shed light on the full extent of the incident. The disruption underscored the critical need for robust safety measures and contingency plans in the transportation sector.
