Afghanistan and UNAMA forge plan for reintegration of displaced persons

The meeting, held on August 20, 2024, centered on strategies for the safe and sustainable return of IDPs to their original communities and the myriad challenges faced by returning refugees.

Khalil Rahman Haqqani, Afghanistan’s acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, engaged in crucial discussions with Indrika Ratwatte, the UNAMA Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, to address the pressing issue of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returning refugees. The meeting, held on August 20, 2024, centred on strategies for the safe and sustainable return of IDPs to their original communities and the myriad challenges faced by returning refugees.

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation highlighted the urgency of creating conducive conditions for the reintegration of displaced individuals. Haqqani underscored the government’s commitment to facilitating their return while emphasizing the need for international support and collaboration. He pointed out that many returning refugees face significant obstacles, including damaged infrastructure, lack of basic services, and security concerns.

Ratwatte, representing the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), echoed the importance of a coordinated approach to address these challenges. She stressed the need for a comprehensive plan that includes not only logistical support but also long-term development strategies to ensure that returnees can rebuild their lives with dignity and security.

Ratwatte’s statement underscores UNAMA’s dedication to collaborating with Afghan authorities to support their efforts in stabilizing the country. This includes providing humanitarian aid, facilitating development projects, and helping maintain peace and security.

The discussions come at a critical time as Afghanistan continues to grapple with the impacts of prolonged conflict and displacement. Both parties recognized the complex nature of the situation and the need for continued dialogue and partnership.

The meeting marks a step forward in addressing the humanitarian needs of displaced individuals and underscores the shared goal of creating a stable environment for their successful return and reintegration.
