In a landmark move for South Korea’s AI sector, LG Group’s AI research arm, LG AI Research, unveiled the country’s first open-source AI model, EXAONE 3.0, on August 7, 2024. This hyperscale multimodal AI model promises significant improvements in performance and cost-efficiency, positioning LG at the forefront of AI innovation.
EXAONE 3.0 is a substantial upgrade from its predecessors, boasting a 56% reduction in processing time, 35% less memory usage, and 72% lower operating costs compared to EXAONE 2.0. This new model also addresses the significant challenge of power consumption in AI technology by reducing its size by 97% while enhancing overall performance.
Trained on over 60 million data points across various fields, including patents, software code, and chemistry, EXAONE 3.0 has achieved top global rankings in 13 benchmark scores. These include real-world applications, coding, and mathematics, outperforming notable AI models such as Meta’s Llama 3.1 and Google’s Gemma 2. LG AI Research plans to expand the model’s training data to over 100 million data points by the end of the year, incorporating additional fields like law, biology, and medicine.
To stimulate the development of the AI ecosystem, LG AI Research has decided to release a lightweight version of EXAONE 3.0 as an open-source model. This initiative is aimed at enabling academia and research institutions to leverage the latest generative AI technology, thereby enhancing AI competitiveness and fostering innovation.
LG is set to integrate EXAONE 3.0 across various products and services in the second half of the year. Additionally, the company has initiated the open beta of ChatEXAONE, an enterprise AI agent designed to improve work productivity for LG affiliates’ employees. This tool facilitates real-time web-based Q&A, document and image analysis, coding, and database management, among other tasks
This development is part of LG’s broader AI transformation strategy, which has been underway since the establishment of LG AI Research in December 2020. With a planned investment of 3.6 trillion won ($2.84 billion) in AI and data research by 2026, LG aims to lead future technological advancements and enhance its AI capabilities through bold investments and strategic partnerships.
