Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has been relocated from Hindon Airbase to an undisclosed safe location in India following her resignation amid mass protests. The 76-year-old Hasina, along with her small entourage, landed at the airbase near New Delhi on Monday afternoon aboard a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft.
Her resignation came after significant public unrest demanding her removal from office. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and senior military officials met Hasina shortly after her arrival, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
While there has been no official statement from the Indian government regarding the recent developments in Bangladesh or Hasina’s next steps, sources familiar with the matter, who chose to remain anonymous due to security reasons, revealed that the former prime minister was moved for her safety. Details regarding her plans to travel to London, where she has family connections, remain uncertain.
Hasina is expected to remain in India for a few days while her travel plans are finalized. She is accompanied by her sister, Sheikh Rehana, whose daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a prominent Labour Party leader in the UK. Siddiq was recently re-elected as an MP and appointed as economic secretary to the treasury, adding to the complexity of Hasina’s situation.
