Tragedy struck the town of Jessore as a hotel owned by an Awami League leader was set ablaze, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people and injuring 84 others. The devastating incident occurred late Tuesday night, amid the heightened tensions and unrest gripping the nation.
Witnesses reported seeing flames engulfing the multi-story building shortly after 11 PM. The hotel, a prominent establishment in the area, was quickly consumed by the fire, trapping many guests and staff inside. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the intensity of the blaze hampered rescue efforts.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the arson attack, which they believe may be politically motivated, given the hotel’s ownership. The Awami League, Bangladesh’s ruling party, has faced increasing opposition and unrest following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent resignation and departure from the country.
“The fire spread rapidly, and it was horrifying to see people trapped inside,” said an eyewitness who narrowly escaped the inferno.Emergency responders worked through the night to control the fire and evacuate survivors. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition. The death toll is feared to rise as rescue operations continue.
The arson attack has further fueled the already volatile situation in Bangladesh, where protests and violence have erupted in the wake of political upheaval. The Bangladesh Army, which has temporarily assumed control to restore order, condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
“We will not tolerate such acts of violence and terror,” an army spokesperson stated. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of all citizens and to stabilize the country.”
International reactions have poured in, with calls for calm and appeals for humanitarian assistance to those affected by the crisis. Human rights organizations have urged the Bangladeshi government to conduct a thorough investigation and provide support to the victims and their families.
