Indian President Droupadi Murmu is set to undertake an official visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste from August 5, 2024. This diplomatic tour aims to strengthen India’s ties with these Pacific and South-East Asian nations and explore new avenues for bilateral cooperation and to reflect on the Act East Policy.
The President’s visit to Fiji on Aug 5 and 6 will mark a significant moment in India-Fiji relations, with a focus on enhancing collaboration in areas such as trade, climate resilience, and cultural exchange. She will be holding bilateral meetings with President Wiliame Katonivere and PM Sitiveni Rabuka.
In New Zealand, President Murmu’s agenda will include discussions on expanding economic ties, particularly in sectors such as technology and education. Both countries are keen on deepening their collaboration in these areas, with a focus on innovation and mutual growth. The visit will also include engagements with the Indian diaspora in New Zealand, highlighting the strong cultural and people-to-people links between the two nations. She will address an education conference there.
Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste will be the final leg of President Murmu’s tour on Aug 10, where she is anticipated to discuss developmental assistance and cooperation in areas critical to Timor-Leste’s progress. India has been an important partner in supporting Timor-Leste’s development goals, and this visit is expected to reinforce the existing relationship. This will be the first ever Head of state visit to Timor-Leste.
President Murmu’s tour reflects India’s commitment to fostering deeper relationships with nations across the Pacific and South-East Asia, promoting mutual interests, and enhancing regional cooperation.
