Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo on Friday, delivering a stern warning regarding the Philippines’ potential deployment of a U.S. intermediate missile system. The meeting, which took place in Vientiane, was aimed at addressing escalating tensions between the two countries.
Wang Yi expressed China’s serious concerns over the possible introduction of the U.S. missile system in the Philippines. He emphasized that such a move could exacerbate regional tensions, spark an arms race, and undermine the interests and aspirations of the Filipino people.
Wang underscored the importance of maintaining good relations between China and the Philippines, highlighting their close geographic proximity and shared interests. He pointed out that recent developments have shown that while building positive relations is challenging, damaging them is alarmingly easy. According to Wang, the difficulties currently plaguing China-Philippines relations stem from the Philippines’ alleged violations of bilateral agreements and ongoing maritime disputes.
Wang also reiterated China’s commitment to stability in the maritime region, noting a recent temporary arrangement regarding humanitarian supplies to Ren’ai Jiao. He stressed that the resolution of current issues depends on the Philippines upholding its commitments and refraining from policy changes that could worsen the situation. Failure to do so, Wang warned, would prompt a firm Chinese response.
On the other hand, Secretary Manalo affirmed the Philippines’ commitment to addressing maritime disputes through dialogue and consultation. He highlighted the historical friendship between the two nations and expressed a desire to navigate current challenges constructively. Manalo also noted the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, underscoring the Philippines’ intention to strengthen communication with China and enhance mutual trust.
