Congress MP Shafi Parambil proposes regulation of airfares in Lok Sabha

Shafi Parambil highlighted the increasing burden on travelers due to fluctuating and often exorbitant airfare charges, particularly during peak travel seasons and emergencies.

Congress Member of Parliament Shafi Parambil has introduced a private member’s resolution in the Lok Sabha calling for comprehensive measures to regulate airfare rates. The resolution, tabled on Wednesday, seeks to address concerns over the rising cost of air travel and its impact on the average Indian consumer.

In his resolution, Parambil emphasized the need for regulatory oversight to ensure fair and transparent pricing in the airline industry. He highlighted the increasing burden on travellers due to fluctuating and often exorbitant airfare charges, particularly during peak travel seasons and emergencies. The proposed measures include the establishment of a regulatory body to monitor airfare trends, enforce transparent pricing policies, and prevent price gouging by airlines.

Parambil’s proposal also suggests implementing a cap on maximum airfare rates and creating a grievance redressal mechanism for passengers. The resolution aims to enhance consumer protection and ensure that air travel remains accessible and affordable for all segments of society.

The resolution has garnered support from various quarters, with several MPs expressing their concerns about the current state of airfare regulation. Advocates argue that the lack of oversight has led to erratic pricing and ticket cost disparity, disproportionately affecting middle and lower-income travellers.

In response, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has indicated that it will review the proposal and consider the feasibility of implementing such measures. The government has acknowledged the need for balanced regulations that can both protect consumers and ensure the sustainability of the airline industry.

The introduction of this resolution marks a significant step in addressing air travel affordability, with further discussions and debates expected in the coming sessions of the Lok Sabha.
