As India prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War, the Indian Army has organized a solemn event titled ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ in Drass, Jammu and Kashmir, to honour soldiers. This event, held on the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, pays tribute to the heroes who displayed unparalleled courage and valour in defending the nation’s borders.
Drass, famously known as the ‘Gateway to Ladakh’ and the site of some of the fiercest battles during the 1999 conflict, serves as a poignant backdrop for the ceremony. ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ includes various commemorative activities such as paying homage at the Kargil War Memorial, where the names of the martyrs are etched as a testament to their bravery.
The Kargil War fought between May and July 1999, saw Indian forces successfully repelling intrusions by Pakistani troops in the high-altitude terrain of Kargil. The conflict resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, but India ultimately regained control of the strategic heights that had been occupied by the infiltrators.
In addition to remembering the fallen soldiers, ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ also honours the resilience and determination of the Indian Army personnel who fought under challenging conditions to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
