Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group (0175. HK) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of 11 low-earth orbit satellites from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan. This marks Geely’s second venture into satellite deployment as part of an ambitious plan to enhance navigation accuracy for autonomous vehicles.

Geely envisions having a total of 72 satellites in orbit by 2025 and plans to build a constellation of 240 satellites. The company, renowned for innovation in the automotive sector, previously entered the satellite arena with its first launch in June 2022.

The satellite network serves a dual purpose for Geely. Its primary objective is to provide high-precision positioning support for self-driving cars, contributing to the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology. Additionally, Geely plans to extend the capabilities of its satellite network to benefit other commercial applications, including providing connectivity for the consumer electronics sector.

Equipped with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) remote sensing functions, Geely’s satellites offer clear high-resolution imaging with a range of 1-5 meters (3.2-16.4 feet). This technology is crucial for ensuring precise navigation and positioning, enhancing the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles.

Traditionally, China’s satellite landscape has been dominated by military initiatives. However, with the government opening the space industry to private investment in 2014, commercial entities, often supported by local governments, have entered the sector. China presently has over 400 deployed satellites in space, comprising both government and commercially-owned satellites, as reported by state media.
