Vodafone Idea AGR dues case live updates: Supreme Court hearing today on Vi’s plea challenging Rs 5,606 crore demand

As of March 2025, Vodafone Idea (Vi) had outstanding AGR dues amounting to ₹83,400 crore. Additionally, as per the company’s latest financial disclosures, Vi’s total debt from banks stood at ₹1,945 crore as of June 30, 2025.

In the previous hearing on October 6, the Supreme Court deferred Vodafone Idea’s plea in the AGR dues case to October 13 after a request from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre. The plea, filed by Vodafone Idea, challenges the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) demand related to adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.

Earlier, on September 26, the top court had postponed the matter to October 6, citing the need for additional time. The Aditya Birla Group-promoted telecom operator continues to seek relief on ₹5,606 crore in additional AGR demands, which it says were wrongly calculated for the period up to FY2016–17.

Shares of Vodafone Idea Ltd were trading slightly lower on Monday ahead of the crucial Supreme Court hearing in the AGR dues case. The stock slipped 1.22% to ₹8.93 apiece on the NSE as of 9:47 AM, compared to its previous close of ₹9.04.

Investors are closely watching today’s proceedings, as the court takes up Vodafone Idea’s plea challenging the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) ₹5,606 crore AGR demand for FY2016–17. The stock has witnessed muted movement in recent sessions, reflecting cautious sentiment amid ongoing legal and financial uncertainty surrounding the telecom operator.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court refused to review its 2021 order in a major setback to telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Both companies had sought rectification of alleged errors in the calculation of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues payable to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The court’s decision meant that the AGR dues determined earlier would remain final, rejecting telecom firms’ claims of arithmetical and duplication errors in the computation.

Vodafone Idea is seeking the quashing of the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) additional adjusted gross revenue (AGR) demands for the period up to FY2016–17. The debt-laden telecom operator has filed a fresh plea in the Supreme Court challenging the DoT’s demand of ₹5,606 crore for FY2016–17.

The company has urged the top court to direct the DoT to comprehensively re-assess and reconcile all AGR dues for the period up to FY2016–17 under the government’s Deduction Verification Guidelines dated February 3, 2020. Earlier, the Centre had informed the court that efforts were underway to arrive at a resolution with Vodafone Idea.
