Rap icon Too $hort and his longtime collaborator, manager David Weintraub, are stepping into the world of feature films as executive producers of Freaky Tales, an anthology thriller bringing 1987 Oakland to life. The film boasts an all-star cast including Pedro Pascal, Tom Hanks, Jay Ellis, Normani, and Ben Mendelsohn, and has already garnered critical acclaim.

Weintraub, known for his work in reality television, described the project as a culmination of years of experience in storytelling and character-driven content. He emphasized that Freaky Tales was four years in the making, with a vision to transport audiences into the wild and raw energy of Oakland’s underground culture.

The film, dedicated to Too $hort’s late brother Wayne “Loc” Shaw and actor Angus Cloud—who passed away in 2023—features Cloud’s final on-screen performance. At the film’s premiere on March 19, Cloud’s mother was present to witness her son’s last work. Weintraub noted that Cloud delivered an exceptional performance, showcasing his immense talent.

Freaky Tales, which received the official Sundance Selection honor last year, weaves together four interconnected narratives set against the backdrop of 1980s Oakland, blending elements of punk, hip-hop, and basketball. Directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, known for their work on Captain Marvel, have crafted a high-energy revenge thriller centered on underdogs seeking justice.

Too $hort, a legend from the East Bay, returns to acting after three decades, not only portraying a role but also serving as the film’s narrator. Additionally, rising Oakland rapper Symba takes on the role of a younger Too $hort, further tying the film’s narrative to the rapper’s musical legacy. Named after Too $hort’s hit song Freaky Tales, the movie incorporates chapters inspired by his discography.

Reflecting on his involvement, Too $hort shared that re-entering the world of film was a long-awaited moment, and the project’s cultural significance made it impossible to pass up. He described the film as an authentic depiction of Bay Area culture, intertwining real-life legends with a fresh, original story. Calling Oakland his muse, he expressed that Freaky Tales serves as both a tribute to the city and a reflection of the environment that shaped him.

Scheduled for release on April 4, Freaky Tales promises a cinematic experience that captures the essence of Oakland’s vibrant and untamed spirit.
