Happy Daughters’ Day to every daughter out there! Every year, daughters’ day is celebrated in India on the last Sunday of September, which happens to be on 27th this year. However, the World Daughters’ Day is celebrated on 2nd September and various other dates in other parts of the world, depending on their cultural context.
In the Indian context, it was started to discourage the outdated mindset of the society which regarded their daughters as a liability. While the story is quite different nowadays thanks to all the daughters’ of the country who excelled with the limited opportunities they had and proved that they are not a liability to anyone.
Despite being the change around them, many Indians still have an obsession to “carry on their bloodline” and which they think is only possible when a boy is born. However, many people end up having half a dozen kids or more just to have a boy. While this seems funny, it also has a darker side to it. Most of these people are poor and educated and can barely feed all their children, leading to malnutrition children, who either die in young age or end up being poor and uneducated because the family cannot afford to send them school and lose a working hand. Well, it can be regarded as one of the reasons for increasing poverty and in some ways contributing to our huge population.
Due to some misconceptions which have been followed blindly in the name of tradition and culture, there are many cases of female infanticide and brutal scenarios where an infant is abandoned after birth. However, those who are lucky enough and don’t become victims of such heinous acts, are treated as a burden their whole life, first by their family and then by their husband’s.
So, instead of making your daughters feel very special today, make them feel a little special every day, even though she is your daughter-in-law.
Once again, Happy Daughters’ Day!
